On Friday, 30th January 2015, we had a lovely surprise visit from the news team of Joy news ; joy News is a News TV channel owned by the Multimedia Group Limited, a Ghanaian media and entertainment company established in 1995.
The visit was possible due to the fact that AYWO’s lead,Portia Dery won the Golden Baobab prize (http://goldenbaobab.org/prizes/winners) for picture book in November 2014 and was interviewed on Joy news during the prize announcements. ( the Golden Baobab Prize is an African literary award that aims to encourage the writing of African literature for children and young adults. Its mission is to identify African literary giants of the next generation and produce classic African stories .
On Friday, at 9:00 am at the Tamale children’s library , AYWO had an exciting reading and mentoring event with 30 primary school children from the seventh Adventist school (SDA) in Tamale, and we were later join by the joy news crew at 10:30 am who took part in the reading and mentoring session.
Children read from selected books for 30 minutes and play card games of letters;where they spell a word from a group of letters. later they had snacks and enjoyed a photo session.
During the event Portia Dery was interviewed about AYWO’ s activities and the importance of using play activities and technology to lure children to read and write ,some of the children, teachers and a library staff was also interviewed on the importance of reading.
